Sampling guide

How fabric sampling works: from inquiry to sample

A sample is the only way to judge handfeel, stretch and color truthfully. This guide explains how sampling works when you source from Guangzhou Zhongda — what to prepare, how cuts are arranged, and how to check a sample against the garment you are developing.

Step 1

Start with a clear brief

Sampling works fastest when the first message already carries the key facts: the garment you are developing, the product code or a reference photo, your color direction, estimated quantity and timing. With this brief, the team can shortlist the closest stock directions before cutting anything.

Send the brief via WhatsApp (+86 159 1896 4057) or the English inquiry form on the contact page.

Color card vs sample cut

Two different tools

A color card shows the color range available in a direction — useful for choosing shades. A sample cut is a piece of the actual fabric — the only way to judge handfeel, stretch, recovery and opacity. Most buyers ask for both together.

Step 2

How sample cuts are arranged

  • Sample cuts are taken from current stock in Guangzhou. Size and color depend on the direction you shortlist.
  • International dispatch runs by courier; sample cut, packing and courier arrangement are confirmed before dispatch.
  • If you need several directions compared, request them in one batch — it is easier to judge relative handfeel side by side.
  • For custom knitting or dyeing orders, a development sample is arranged differently from a stock cut; the timeline and terms are confirmed per order.

Step 3

Check the sample against your garment

When the sample arrives, compare it in the way your production will actually use it:

CheckHow
Handfeel & weightHandle the full cut, not a small corner; compare against your reference garment feel.
Stretch & recoveryStretch in both directions and release; observe how quickly it returns.
OpacityPlace over a light source and over skin-tone backing, in your target color.
ColorJudge under daylight rather than a phone screen; check against your color standard.
SurfaceLook at it from the wearing distance of the finished garment — gloss and texture read differently up close.
After-careWash and dry a piece the way the finished garment will be cared for.

These checks are a starting point for your own garment trial; they do not replace your production testing.

Step 4

From approved sample to order

An approved sample locks the direction — not the final terms. Before bulk production, reconfirm the batch, current stock, price, color standard and dispatch timing for the exact quantity you are ordering. Keep the approved sample as your color and handfeel reference for the bulk comparison.

Common questions

What buyers usually ask next

  • Can several colors be sampled in one batch? — Ask when arranging; it depends on current stock.
  • Can I send my own reference garment? — Yes, a reference garment or swatch helps matching.
  • What if the sample does not match? — Share photos and target requirements; alternatives can be checked.
