Nylon Spandex Fabric FAQ: What 10 Questions Should Buyers Ask Before Ordering?

Zhang Zengwen · Maoxing Textile Dyeing

Short answer: Nylon spandex fabric (nylon + elastane, 锦氨面料) is abrasion resistant and recovers well, but it has three weak points: poor lightfastness, poor heat resistance and a tendency to snag. Before ordering, buyers should ask about abrasion, pilling grade, ironing, sunlight, chlorine, the safety category for intimate wear, fiber content ratio, recovery, colorfastness and sampling. Confirm each point with swatches and test reports, not verbal claims.

Maoxing Textile Dyeing has been making nylon spandex fabric at Zhongda, Guangzhou for 15 years. These are ten questions buyers often raise when they visit our stall, answered one by one.

How does nylon spandex compare on the points buyers check?

Quick card of 10 questions when buying nylon spandex: abrasion, pilling, ironing, sunlight, chlorine, skin contact, fiber content, recovery, colorfastness and sampling

Nylon spandex is strong on abrasion and recovery and weak on light and heat; the table puts the key points side by side.

1. Is nylon spandex fabric abrasion resistant?

Yes. Nylon's abrasion resistance is 10 times that of cotton fiber. According to the China Cotton Textile Association's textile knowledge pages, nylon (polyamide fiber) has high strength and good abrasion resistance, which is why nylon spandex is common in leggings and sports bras.

Abrasion resistance is not the same as snag resistance. Abrasion is about surface wear; snagging happens when a sharp object pulls a yarn out. When choosing leggings fabric, lightly scratch the swatch with a fingernail or rough object to see whether loops pull out.

2. Does nylon spandex pill, and how do you read the pilling grade?

Pilling grades under GB/T 4802.1-2008 circular locus method: grade 5 no change to grade 1 dense over the whole surface; higher grade means better pilling resistance

Check the pilling grade report: GB/T 4802.1-2008 (circular locus method) grades fuzzing and pilling from 1 to 5, and a higher grade means better pilling resistance.

  • Grade 5: no change
  • Grade 4: slight fuzzing and pilling
  • Grade 3: moderate fuzzing and pilling on part of the surface
  • Grade 2: distinct fuzzing and pilling over most of the surface
  • Grade 1: dense fuzzing and pilling over the whole surface

Do not just ask whether a nylon spandex fabric pills. Ask which grade the report shows and which test method was used, because results can differ between methods.

3. Can you iron nylon spandex fabric?

Yes, but only on a low setting with a pressing cloth, because nylon's heat resistance is not good. Check the garment care label first; care symbols follow GB/T 8685-2008, Textiles - Care labelling code using symbols, and the dots in the iron symbol show the permitted heat level.

How to avoid damage: test on a seam allowance or swatch corner, use a low setting with a cloth in between, and do not hold the iron in one spot. Nylon also deforms and wrinkles easily under small forces, so hanging a wrinkled piece to recover is safer than pressing it hard.

4. Is nylon spandex damaged by sunlight?

Long sun exposure is a weak point: nylon's lightfastness is not good. Sun-protection shirts and fishing shirts worn outdoors for long hours can be affected by long exposure, so ask about light fastness before ordering.

How to avoid problems: for outdoor orders, sun-test a swatch against an unexposed piece before bulk; dry garments in the shade. UPF performance should be confirmed by a test report.

5. Is nylon spandex resistant to chlorine?

Chlorine performance must be confirmed by a test report; for swimwear, ask for colorfastness to chlorinated water. This can be tested under GB/T 8433-2013, Textiles - Tests for colour fastness - Colour fastness to chlorinated water (swimming-pool water). Our source material contains no reliable data on how well nylon spandex resists chlorine, so we draw no conclusion here.

How to avoid problems: swimwear buyers should request this report at sampling and add a rinse-after-swimming note to the garment label.

6. What safety category do lingerie and swimwear fabrics need?

GB 18401-2010 safety categories table: A infant products, formaldehyde ≤20 mg/kg, pH 4.0-7.5; B direct skin contact ≤75, 4.0-8.5; C no direct skin contact ≤300, 4.0-9.0; confirmed by test report

Fabrics in direct skin contact, such as lingerie and swimwear, need at least Category B under GB 18401-2010; infant products need Category A. GB 18401-2010, National general safety technical code for textile products, divides textiles into Categories A, B and C; products not in direct skin contact need at least Category C, and the label must state the category.

CategoryFormaldehyde (mg/kg)pH range
A≤204.0-7.5
B≤754.0-8.5
C≤3004.0-9.0

Which category a fabric meets is determined by its test report. Write the required category into the order contract for intimate products.

7. How do you read the fiber content ratio?

The ratio on the label lists nylon first and spandex second. The ratio on the label should match the test report; if it does not, ask why.

Choose the ratio by end use. Yoga wear, swimwear and lingerie need different stretch, so ask the supplier to suggest several swatches for your use. We give no recommended ratio here; decide after comparing swatches.

8. Does nylon spandex recover well?

Yes. Nylon itself has good elasticity and recovery, and spandex adds stretch. Nylon spandex with good recovery snaps back after stretching without bagging, which suits leggings and sports bras that need a shaping fit.

Nylon's weak side is that it deforms and wrinkles easily under small forces. Stretch the swatch several times in both directions, and check knees and seat areas after the garment is made.

9. How do you check colorfastness on nylon spandex?

Check colorfastness item by item: washing, perspiration, rubbing and light, plus chlorinated water for swimwear. Colorfastness is how well a color holds up after washing, rubbing, sunlight and similar treatments, and each item has its own test method.

Because nylon's lightfastness is not good, ask specifically about light fastness for dark shades and outdoor uses. For swimwear chlorine fastness, see question 5.

10. What should you ask when sampling nylon spandex?

State the end use first, then ask about fiber content, weight and width, color, and which reports are available. The end use decides what matters: recovery and abrasion for leggings, chlorine for swimwear, skin feel and safety category for lingerie, lightfastness for sun-protection wear.

  1. End use and style.
  2. Fiber content ratio, weight and width.
  3. Shade or color standard, and whether bulk can match the swatch.
  4. Whether pilling, safety category and colorfastness reports exist, and under which standards.
  5. How the approved sample is kept and how bulk is matched to it.

How do you avoid nylon spandex's weak points?

Three weak points of nylon spandex, lightfastness, heat and snagging, with how to avoid each

Nylon spandex has three weak points: poor lightfastness, poor heat resistance and snagging, and each has a workaround.

Weak pointTypical problemHow to avoid it
LightfastnessColor and surface deteriorate after long sun exposureAsk for light fastness; dry in shade
Heat resistanceDamage from hot ironingFollow the care label; iron low with a cloth
SnaggingYarns pulled by jewelry, nails or hook-and-loop tapeScratch-test swatches; add a care note on the label

FAQ

Is nylon spandex more comfortable than polyester spandex?

Nylon spandex usually feels more comfortable. Nylon absorbs moisture better than most synthetic fibers and is more comfortable to wear than polyester, which is why it is common in lingerie and yoga wear.

What pilling grade is good enough?

A higher grade means better pilling resistance; the required grade depends on end use and your customer. Under GB/T 4802.1-2008, grade 5 shows no change and grade 2 shows distinct pilling over most of the surface.

A supplier says the fabric is fine for skin contact. How do I verify it?

Check the GB 18401-2010 category on the test report. Direct skin contact needs at least Category B and infant products need Category A.

What should I do if nylon spandex wrinkles?

Hang it to recover first; if ironing is needed, use a low setting and a pressing cloth. Nylon's heat resistance is not good.
